Yes Wiliam, Every box was trialed & tested on the birds. I kept on knocking on my neighbours doors asking to install a nest box (no charge). I think I have about 30x boxes scattered around now. Bird heaven.
Thanks,

I admire the work you are doing Joe. It must have taken a helluva effort to work out what would work with the many different birds and animals you are helping survive in both rural and urban areas. Thanks for the great effort.

Hi Kerrie,
I normally build long lasting boxes which have a hollow log entrance, stainless steel screws, marine grade plywood, steel covered hinged roof with brass hinges. As you could imagine they last more than 10 years. Now, I'm wondering, is it worth constructing ,and offering to the general public, a plain box with no hollow(just a hole). No screws(joined with nails), not painted. No anti-bee ventilation. Another words a low spec box. I mean it would work but not last as long. This box would be for the Ringtailed possums.
I would think an asking price of $145.00 would cover production costs. I'd love to know what do you think???

All good, the missus talked me into putting it up an Ailanthus (Tree Of Heaven). I was already planning to pollard it soon before it began to regrow. Instead of cutting it down I ring-barked it with the bat box up there, little bit higher now too ;-)
The bat box's aspect is not perfect now though, ESE. It's open all around it if that helps. Not sure, hard to change as it is set by the fork in the tree.

Hi Paul,
The bats will tolerate the swaying. They think its a tree anyway. If you decide to stiffen it up don't attach any "stay"wires like a TV antenna. The bats will hit them and be put off.
I would re-enforce the pole itself if you are really worried.
Great effort, Have fun,
Joe.

Hi Joe,

Just built a bat bot and put it up on a 4m pole. My question is how much movement do they tolerate? The box and pole is swaying in strong wind, which there has been lots of in the 24 hours since erecting the box, but not much more than if it was tied to any of the trees here at around the same height. I'm thinking of stiffening the bat pole. No pun intended, much.

Thanks
Paul

Thanks so much for your reply! I watch many barn owl box streams around the world, but hard to find any in Australia to watch! So glad there is a nesting pair near you, great to hear. Nice that you have put up these boxes for them as natural habits are fading fast, great work.
